Germany Tax?

Hi!

I have two questions.
First I have been living in germany for three years. I left America having never been registered as a tax payer because I was a student under my parents. Do I need to be paying taxes over there or be registered?
Second when I move back from Germany to America, How can I get my social tax back? "renteversicherung" ?

First off, are you an American citizen or green card holder? If the answer is yes, then you are supposed to file US tax returns. You are subject to US income tax on a worldwide basis, therefore the money you earn while living in Germany is subject to US income tax.

On your second question, I can assume that you are a local hire in Germany (was hired directly by the company in Germany)? For the German social taxes that you paid, you do not get it back. Instead, the social taxes you paid will stay in Germany, and then when you reach retirement age, you can collect a small government pension from Germany.
