Do you have to have good credit to work at Bank of America?

I'm thinking about applying for a job at Bank of America and am wondering if you have to have good credit.

Well I worked for a mortgage company and they definately did a credit check. A few minor things came back that I had to actually explain what happened. it didnt stop me from getting the job and my credit is mediocre at best.

I am not sure if you have to have good credit or not. Not sure if that has anything to do with getting the job. But you cannot have anything bad on your background check.

More and more companies are running credit checks for employment. Financial institutions are even more likely to check your credit

Yes; to work at any bank they want you to have good credit. It demonstrates responsibility with money. My GF works at a bank and is in charge of HR. They had to turn down a candidate b.c of her credit 3 weeks ago.

I work for a different large bank & they did a credit check on me before I started & they still hired me. I do not have good credit.

Good luck

They do a criminal background check ..... and a reference background check

No - but do you know which end of a broom to use?

A company has no right to check your credit rating. They can do a criminal background check because that's in the public record. Your credit rating is private and only open to those that you authorize to check it.

Don't lie about anything their fbi back ground check is very thorough. They do Social Sec. verification, education verification, drivng records, drug test, and criminal background check. You can't beat the test so don't try it because you will fail. In some cases they do credit checks for manager's to prevent fraud.

That being said if you have a bad enough credit score I do not believe BoA will take the time to ask you to explain what happened, they will simply move on to the next candidate whose credit is not in the dumpster. There are simply too many applicants in todays economy for them to take the time to do this. This is why they do group interviews, not one on one. My friend applied for a higher level position with BoA and it was a group interview with 13 other candidates. One of the interviewers wouldn't even shake his hand and just walked out of the room. He was e-mailed 8 hours later and told he didn't get the job. When he called to inquire why, he left a voice mail and received no call back from ANYONE. Dont expect a personal, friendly interview process like the guy below me describes from BoA, not gonna happen. Believe it or not, BoA is a financial institution, do you really believe they want people in collections and with outstanding debts handling wads of cash everyday? Would you? If you handle money... expect your credit to be checked. Yes you have to give them permission... if you dont, your not getting hired, just like if you refused the drug test.

Prophet's answer is partially correct.

An employer can only check your credit if you authorize them to, which is standard procedure now with most companies.

That being said, B Of A's policies are their policies. If they like you, they will call you regardless of the credit issue, and ask for more explanation about what happened and what you will do to fix it. I actually called my neighbor who is in HR for B Of A at the HQ in Charlotte, and that came from her.

Background checks are a different issue alltogether, so make sure that if anything on your credit is related to this, or anything financial, that you disclose it up-front, and be straight forward with them about it when they call you to set-up the interview (about your credit, etc) and that will also put a feather in your cap when you speak to them.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
