Can a merchant limit the amount I charge to my credit card in one transaction?

I have the cash to buy a new car, but want to put it on my credit card for rewards. The dealership says it will only allow me to put up to $5,000 on my card. My credit limit is $30,000. Can the dealership do this?

no the only one that can do that kind of restriction is your card issuing company..sounds like they want you to finance with them...they make no money if you charge it..but they pay to use the credit card every time someone charges something they pay a fee to be allowed to accept that card...tell them you will go elsewhere and actually leave....

The dealership has limits as to how much they can accept on a card, imposed by their bank. So, yes they can. Think about this...you buy a car, charge it to your credit card, and then dispute the charges once you recieve the title. That's a huge risk that their bank is not willing to take and if you were the bank then you'd want to reduce your exposure to risk as well. Maybe you can use one of the checks that your credit card mails you and still get your rewards?

Yes, they can. They are not even required to let you use a credit card, let alone let you put it all on the card.

You can offer to walk out the door and go to a different company. Since it will cost them less than 1000 to process the card they may change their mind.

lol A merchant can limit it. It is their business. They can do what they want including refusing yoiur service
