How good or bad as a neighborhood is Whiting, Indiana?

I'm thinking of moving to the northwest region of Indiana, not too far from Chicago.

I live in Whiting, IN. I have been living here since 2001. WOW its been a long time. Well I used to live in South Chicago which in some areas are GHETTO. So Whiting for me was like the suburbs. But realistically I think its really nice. There is their motto The Little City on the Lake. It has a downtown on 119th St. And it has like an old town feel to it. It also has an old neighborhood area near Whihala beach that are like show houses. Where they decorate their houses beutifully inside and out and they have a contest. Also the beach is nice, not poluted like the beaches in Chicago. You also have only a few houses around the neighborhood that are kinda abandoned but not alot. They also have a Whiting Community Center that I go out often that has a gym, pool, sauna, basketball court, bowling lanes, classes and stuff for kids. I love it cuz you right near the city of chicago but not the hussle of a city. And did I mention taxes are way cheaper. To get your car registered is way cheaper compared to Chicago. In the chicago you need a city sticker too. In indiana you dont. Which you save alot a money and there are no taxes on food. And the Whiting police are strict so you know you are safe they have a 10 block radius so there are always around which is ok. But if you want something nicer I recommend Munster, Merrillville or Schererville. There its more like suburbs BIGGER HOUSES AND subdivisions. Its really beautiful out there. But if you want something smaller little city near the big city I'd go with Whiting. I love it here.


On, the contrary IT IS NOT polluted. But there is a Refinery and industrial companies. The whole south chicago and northwest indiana is surrounded by these companies. If that bothers you then you might not like it. I have been surrounded by that my whole life so I doesnt bother me.

Whiting, IN is not a bad neighborhood. I would suggest that once you find the area that you would like to live in, during the evening and night drive through the neighborhood. If possible, drive through more than once. Since you are looking into Indiana, check out Munster, the side closest to schereville. Very nice area, great to raise a family and purchase a home/rent.

A few words about Whiting............ Dirty...........Polluted (Oil Refinery right there) ..............Basic Ghetto.

Its nice and quite, it is not a bad place to raise a family and its about 15 from Chicago city limits. I grew up on the SouthEast side very close to Whiting. If you want a nicer area go to South Hammond by the College or like everyone else said go to Munster. Its very nice in Munster and it is close to great shopping. I currently live on the border of Muster and Hammond. I just moved here 3 months ago and I love it.
