Spouse non resident in 2007. How not to claim spousal amount?

My marital status changed in 2007. I would like to know how not to claim spousal amount as my wife entered Canada in January 2008.

Yes, as mentioned I have used online tax programs like Ufile, HR Block and Quick tax. Each of these automatically consider the spousal amount.

Should I file my tax returns as "Single" and then call up CRA to change my status to "Married"? Is this a risk?

you can't claim for a spouse if you weren't living together

I think what he means is that when he uses a tax program to prepare his taxes, if he enters "married" but does not enter an income, the program automatically applies all the deductions. I'm not familiar with most of the programs to know how to override it without putting in an amount for your spouse's income, but I'll look into it.

You want to know how NOT to claim? Just don't claim the spousal amount.

The above is right, the spousal amount only applies to someone living with you, so you are correct there is no valid claim.
