If you didnt work this past year do you still have to file an income tax return in canada? |
I didnt work this past year thus i didnt get a t4 slip so i have nothing to file...does this mean i dont have to file a return? No. You never have to file income taxes unless you owe money or if CRA specifically requests it. Yes, if you are a Canadian resident (not just a citizen) and over 18 you must file every year, regardless of income. once you start filing, it just never ends.... until you leave the country and become a non-resident. you just file $0. How did you live? If you have nobody supporting you (as in a parent, spouse etc) you can claim a GST credit. It gets more complicated if someone is claiming you as a dependent, but you still might qualify for some amount of credit. For the GST credit, you need to file, although it's pretty simple, since you show $0 income. |
