If you didnt work this past year do you still have to file an income tax return in canada?

I didnt work this past year thus i didnt get a t4 slip so i have nothing to file...does this mean i dont have to file a return?

No. You never have to file income taxes unless you owe money or if CRA specifically requests it.

You probably should because you might be entitled to various tax credits (rent for example) plus you probably qualify for GST rebates.

Yes, if you are a Canadian resident (not just a citizen) and over 18 you must file every year, regardless of income. once you start filing, it just never ends.... until you leave the country and become a non-resident. you just file $0.

Because you have filed once, the government will expect you to send in the following years filing. they will ask you.... hound you to file.... even if you earned $0.

you only pay income tax on earnings after $9,600, then you will be expected to pay 15% tax up to the next income level.... i dunno the increments but it goes up and up.

How did you live? If you have nobody supporting you (as in a parent, spouse etc) you can claim a GST credit. It gets more complicated if someone is claiming you as a dependent, but you still might qualify for some amount of credit. For the GST credit, you need to file, although it's pretty simple, since you show $0 income.

But if you didn't have someone supporting you, you must have been on social assistance of some sort, which means you do need to file.
