Can i claim mileage for business and if so what rate?

Can i claim mileage for business and if so what rate?

You may claim mileage for business trip if your employer requires u to use a personal car to see clients or customers. Pls note that to and from your home to your employer's work place is considered personal and no business can be claimed.

A reasonable mileage claim may be about 48 cents/km covering gas, insurance and car depreciation.

Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) form T2200, Declaration of Conditions of Employment, should be completed by the employee and employer in order to claim these car expenses.

yes, the rates for 2007 were:

> 48.5 cents per mile for business miles driven;
> 20 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes;
> 14 cents per mile driven in service to a charitable organization.

as an employee, you can take business mileage if you itemize deductions (Schedule A) in the Unreimbursed Employee Business Expense section, you first claim the
Expenses on form 2106, then that goes Schedule A, Line 21.
Note the expenses in that section will get reduced by 2% of your AGI.
Also you can maintain full records on the vehicle to claim actual costs or just maintain the milage records to take the above standard mileage rates.
You need maintain records for the Business use miles, Driving from Home to your normal place of business and the return trip Home does not count as business mileage. But if you work more then 1 job, the travel from the one to the other does count, providing you don't go home in-between. School to job or vice versa also counts toward deductable mileage.

The same form is also used for any job required out of town travel expenses.

Late edit: oops just noticed this was the Canadian Section for taxes, sorry those are US answers obviously
