How does Ontario Works treat Income Tax Refunds?

I have been in receipt of social assistance since January 2006 (Ontario Works).
I just filed my income tax returns for 2006 and 2007. I am expecting a refund of approximately $400 for each year.
My question is 鈥?Will Ontario Works expect me to report my income tax refunds as income?
If so, should I expect Ontario Works to deduct a portion or all of this refund amount from my benefits?
Any relevant comments or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Kate.

I don鈥檛 think that the tax refunds constitute income under Ontario Works.

Examples of sources of income, for purposes of ontario works, may include employment earnings, training allowances, boarder income, sponsorship payments, WSIB benefits, pensions, interest and dividends, repayment of a loan, insurance or accident claims, self-employment or farm income, OSAP, child/spouse support, EI benefits, War Veterans鈥?Allowance, sales of assets, legal settlements, inheritance or lotteries and compensation for victims of crime.

You may wish to contact Ontario Works to be sure.

Income tax refunds are not income, they are a return of income you previously made, but which was mistakenly sent to the CRA.

No worries.
