Why do i pay taxes now theat im married?

Every since i got married, now all of sudden im paying a lot of taxes back, and my husband keeps on getting refunds... His father is doing our taxes and im not sure if he knows what he is doing. Does anyone know why this is?

sorry spelling mistake. "That"

It's hard to say without looking at your previous years' taxes. Since they now use both yours and your husband's incomes to calculate credits, you are likely not entitled to certain credits that you previously had received. And even if your combined incomes are still low enough that you would get the credits, only ONE of you can claim the credit. Chances are that your husband's father is putting those credits on his return. There may be other factors as well, like if your husband puts money into an RRSP, he may get more of a refund. If you were previously a single parent, you would have got more of a refund. It's difficult to determine without all the information.

I would never trust anyone to do my taxes unless i knew for sure that they were a certified tax accountant.

You may not be eligible for certain credits anymore (if you had kids prior to the marriage, you can't claim them as equivalent to spouse when you are married).. In addition, does your husband make less than you? He claims the child care if so. Do you donate to charity? Your father-in-law may be putting those credits on his return, instead of some on both returns. Is your husband claiming RRSP contributions?

Have you checked your TD1? Are you getting the correct amount of tax taken off?

Compare the returns. The returns should be optimized to make it best for the family. Buy some tax software and do your own return (and husband's) if you'd like. You sign it, so you should know what is on it.

Are you canadian??

If so, and you make an income of more than $9600 in 2007
you cannot be claimed as a dependant and must complete your own tax return.

The only place you have anything to do with your husbands return in this case is tax credits based on total family income.
And this is just a figure that is entered at certain points, not affecting taxes paid, or owed
