Canadian Taxes-transfering tuition amounts to mother?

What exactly happens when I fill out the section that says "Student's authorization to transfer tuition, education, and textbooks amounts"

My mom wants me to transfer the amounts to her cause she paid for my tuition but all my friends are telling me that I'm getting ripped off. What's going on?

Your mother will be able to use the amounts that you can't use this year. There is no way for you to transfer amounts that you can use this year.

If you don't authorize the transfer, you will be able to carry forward the amounts to a future year.

If your mother paid your tuition and you didn't pay room and board at home, it would seem only fair if you transfer the tuition, education, and text book amounts to your mother, so she can save a bit on her income tax.

If you want to know more about these non-refundable credits, here's a link: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/p105/R...

just want to add..if you carry the amount forward to use in future years, you no longer have the option to transfer it to your mother.
And I'll repeat this because it's important... you have to apply tuition to YOUR return before you can transfer the rest to your mother. If you do not, both of your returns will be adjusted and depending on how much you were able to transfer, your mother could get a pretty big bill (you would get a refund)
