Do I have to pay for a tax if I bring a custom-built computer into Canada?

I plan to buy computer parts from Newegg and build it and take it with me when I move to Canada.

What is the typical cost of the tax. Is it the 6%GST tax or a different tax?

Yes, you'll have to pay the tax.

Normally when you move to Canada, you are allowed to bring in your personal effects without the incidence of any commodity taxes or customs duties

As a result, it is unlikely that you will have to pay any GST or PST on the computer, assuming that it is valued less than $10,000 and are part of your personal effects when you move to Canada.

However, you should review the settlers effects rules that are available from Canada Border Services Agency. It is also important to review the Settlers' Effects Tariff Item which outlines and explains the conditions under which a settler may import goods into Canada for personal or household use without the payment of duties.
