The main Public Libary building in Boston is right in Copley Square. There is a Green Line subway stop immediately downstairs, the Back Bay stop on the Orange Line is nearby, and several busses travel through the area.

There are also branch locations available in every neighborhood in Boston.

In addition to books, you can also borrow videos, DVDs and audio tapes if you have a library card and no past due items. Any Massachusetts resident can get a library card for free, all you have to do is bring in a copy of your lease or a utility bill to show them. If you lose your card, it costs $1 to replace it.

One of the best things about the Boston library system, and of many other major cities is the inter-library loan system. That means that if there is a book you want to borrow, and your local branch does not have it, you can request that it be sent over from a branch that ~does~ have it. Once it arrives at the branch where you want to pick it up, the library will either send you a letter, call you on the phone, or email you (your choice).

You can use the compters and access the internet with your library card, too. My personal advice is to avoid the main building because of how busy it is. You would need to put your name on a waiting list, and you are limited to either an hour or sometimes only a half hour, depending on how many other people signed up for computer time. Go to one of the neighborhood branches instead. If it's not busy, they may let you take some extra time.
