Tenent rights in sober living homes privately owned? |
I live in a sober home for women we are considered homeless and the house is considered a shelter, however it is privately owned by a man who gets federal and state grants, we pay 150.00 a weeek plus he is sometimes abusive but we have no where else to go and if we disagree he will throw us out, he just throw a women 58 yrs old out for being messy do we have any rights The owner has the right to make reasonable rules for living in the shelter and to enforce them, however, that does not extend to "abuse." If you have legitimate complaints, these should be directed to the state or federal grant programs from which the owner receives money, because he should be reporting to these agencies regarding the operation of the shelter. ok I'm confused...you pay $600 a month for what?...and why does he get Fed and State $$$?!...if this is a sober home then there must be some sort of program being run...like group support or in-house counseling....is food included..do you have case managers or advocates?...I mean why are you paying $600 a month if this is a STATE and/or Federal run program plus he gets $$ from you...what are you getting for it besides shelter?..there has to be more to this....otherwise anyone could just open up their 3-deckers or whatever and call it a sober home!...so which is it...like a place where they say People with Pets or who smoke do not need to reply?..like people who drink do not need to reply!?...the first person who answered got it right...you need to find out who is granting him this $$ and report him anonymously....then call a battered womens agency and report him!! and if he is a true Program Director this guy is whacked and you can sue! or at least bring criminal charges i bet....so did this woman break a rule or was she really just messy...shoot you should come to my house to see messy!....if he's a regular landlord..no way in hell can he throw someone out...he has to go to Housing Court file a motion to have her evicted...and then she can get free representation and at the very least can stall and not get tossed out without proper legal proceedings...so that would have given her time....you need to call an area Free Legal service agency and get counsel....but definetly do that other stuff too....and for God sakes...stay strong.... |
