How much per inch will the "Big Dig" in Boston cost if 1 mile cost 2 billion dollars?

I thought of this question when I was watching The World News tonight. The "Big Big has turned into a disaster. A lady was just killed after part of a tunnel collapsed on her car. This is a classic case of shotty craftsmanship and negligence. I once heard that the average cost of one mile of Interstate cost 1 million dollars. So how can this project cost 2,000 times more?

The cost was driven by the fact that it was one of the most complicated pieces of highway construction ever undertaken and the fact that every contractor, politician, and their uncle had their fingers in the pie. For what? To save the average commuter 15-20 minutes! Can you imagine what you could have done to improve public transportation with half of what was spent on the Big Dig. Blame Kennedy and Kerry!

I'm from Mass and am ashamed of the whole mess. Its all politics as usual in this state.

There are 63,360 inches in a mile. So, $2,000,000,000 / 63,360 would be $31,565.66 per inch.

In contrast one mile of interstate at $1,000,000 per mile would cost $15.78 per inch (1,000,000 / 63,360)

For the $14 billion, they did give us a good PR video on how the new system was supposed to work for the community access channels on cable. If you ever see the modern marvels program on the history channel it was a pretty complicated effort to build tunnels under existing buildings, roadways and active shipping channels and disrupt our lives as little as they did. Until this past week. and that other time when the tunnels leaked and when the truck turned over going too fast and closed the northbound side for a few days.

The only real improvement I have seen on the Expressway is the zipper lane, but it only takes one slow poke or idiot to screw that up too
