What is the difference between a sales tax and a GST?

What is the difference between a sales tax and a GST?

In essence, there is not much difference. They are both a tax on goods. However, GST is a muich broader tax. GST taxes almost everything.
Sales Tax is/was effectively a tax calculated at a pre set percentage on the Wholesale Sales Price. There were different rates for varying classes of goods and many classes were not taxable. The Sales Tax rate ranged from around two and a half percent to around thirty percent. It did not tax services.
GST is a tax on both goods and services at a flat rate of 10 percent. It is effectively a tax paid by the end user. There are few exceptions to items which are taxed with GST. The most notable exception is fresh food, but only unprocessed food. The processing is a service which attracts GST.
Sales Tax applies to goods at varying rates.
GST applies to almost everything at a set rate.

Hubert's answer is right. I think the main difference is that GST is a broad based consumption tax which is ultimately borne by the consumer. A sales tax is borne by business, etc
