Why did drive-in theaters close down?

how to open a drive-in theater

There are a few in our area in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, but not nearly as many as 20-30 years ago. We still go every now and again, and the line up to get in is always very long, and it is usually packed. You have to get there very early to get a good spot. It's a great experience. We love it. It's a great part of the summer time.

That is a very good question!!!!!!!!!!

there is still a few drive in theatres around in fact I'm going to one tomorow night :)

because now they have sit -in theatres

it started to rain out.....sides inside is beta

We have drive-ins here in Phoenix.

Air conditioning.

its a lot more convenient and comfortable for people in a cinema??

There is a drive-in right next to Dothan, Alabama. I LOVE IT!

Actually there are some still up and running. And they are really cheap too!! Where Im from in East TN. There is one and it plays anywhere from 2-4 movies and its only $7.00 and you get to sit through all the movies. The only bad thing is its closed during the winter season. I love to go to the drive ins, they are a lot more private....and you dont have anyone talk in your ear or putting their feet in your back.

because video killed the radio star

People want the whole experience. Did you see the multiplex's now? They have other entertainment tied to the theatre---restauranats, arcades, shopping, that can't be tied to drive ins. Too bad.

Why would anyone from today's society want to sit in their car to watch a movie? Come on now. I hear there is one in Oklahoma.

Apparently they were not popular enough to stay open?? Its sad coz they are like a blast from the past kinda thing. I loved going to the drive in. Our towns drive in only closed last year i think.

鈾?Actually one just opened around my area 鈾?/div>

drive-ins closed down when video became popular.

no more business.... I mean come on. Why does anything close down!!!!!!!!!

there's still a couple where i live...

I don't know why others did...we still have one in my town.

Gas prices - unless your willing to let your gas burn for two hours to keep the air conditoning running - a must in the south.

Mosquitos

No surround sound

One plus would be - I wouldn't have to hear everybody else adding thier own soundtrack

Because they were vulnerable to the weather perhaps
They couldn't be open in the winter
and since they were big, they were hard to maintain
Also, there are the freeloaders

We have some in Illinois. And there is a few companies that rent out their equipment.

Well i think they closed down because of weather issues.

Rain, cold, heat snow. All makes it hard to watch a good movie.

We have several in our area. They are okay, but if you sit in your car, it gets too hot and if you sit outside your car, the mosquitoes bite you until you are anemic. Maybe that is why..?

In southern California I only know of two that are still open. One in Riverside and the other in Barstow.
The land that they were on became so valuable as office buildings and homes, the property was sold to make way for them.

I miss them, it seems as though everyone is in a rush these days and families do get together when they can.but all of the Old shops and theaters are closing and my sis used to Love them too, even the Old time drive-in restaurants in my town are closing since I have always wanted Our children to see the Old cars and drive-ins...That was so much fun and brings back so many Good memories...

We have 2 to chose from. I love them. It is great to go a bit early with the kids and let them play a bit before the movie. My kids are little and love movies but have a hard time sitting still for two or more hours and ask lots of question. I don't have to worry my kid talking or moving around bothers the other people.
You can't beat the price. We paid $12 for 4 people to see 2 movies. Oh yea, we got to take a bunch of snacks and drinks. Another savings.

I AGREE. Thats one of lifes simple pleasures.
like everything else, diminishing in our self-destuctive
culture. Hardly anyone is reading anymore or even
stepping outside to water the lawn? WHATS NEXT,
Parking INSIDE YOUR HOUSE to avoid going outside?

property values went up and they sold and made alot of money

because they are not climate controlled and not "family friendly" unless you have the type of family that lets your kids run wild...

In my hometown, it became so rowdy that people just stopped going.
